Find out if you qualify for an Energy Star Cool Savings Rebate...

Since the 1970s, the number of central air conditioning systems in Ontario has increased dramatically. Central air conditioning can account for up to half of your summer electricity bill. In fact, Ontarians now use more electricity in the summer months than they do in the winter months, in part due to the proliferation of central air conditioning.

The OPA's Cool Savings Rebate Program provides you with the opportunity to help do your part to reduce Ontario's electricity consumption while saving money. You'll also be doing something good for the environment. On hot summer days, Ontario relies more heavily on coal-fired generating stations to meet our electricity needs.

Making sure you have an efficient central air conditioning system and using it wisely has many pluses: you can help reduce electricity use and pollution, save money on your hydro bill and take advantage of these cool rebates!

HERE's HOW: Have an existing central air conditioning system? Make sure it's running at peak efficiency by having it tuned-up every year by a certified technician. Plus, annual tune-ups help extend the life of your system and protect your investment. This rebate expired June 30, 2007. Please ensure your rebate claim form is submitted by August 1, 2007 to be eligible.

In addition to the rebates available through the OPA's Cool Savings Rebate homeowners may also qualify for grants and incentives from Natural Resources Canada. Find out more about Natural Resources Canada's ecoEnergy Retrofit grants and incentives. When you need to have your heating and/or cooling equipment replaced, you can help by investing in a central air conditioning system that is ENERGY STAR®-qualified.

• * Get a $350 rebate when you replace your old central air conditioning system with an ENERGY STAR®-qualified system.
• * Get a $750 rebate when you opt for a central air conditioning system that exceeds the ENERGY STAR® standard and also install a replacement high-efficiency furnace equipped with an ECM motor.
• * Get a $100 rebate when you replace your old furnace with a mid-efficiency one equipped with an ECM motor.
• * Get a $250 rebate when you replace your old furnace with a high-efficiency one equipped with an ECM motor.

Another way to help achieve this is to use a programmable thermostat to adjust your household temperature at night and when you are away from your home. You can receive a rebate of $50 on the purchase and installation of a programmable thermostat.

To be eligible for the Cool Savings Rebate, you must purchase your system from or have services performed by a participating contractor
